| 507 | Navvies were the men who actually built railways. The building of rail lines was very labour intensive. At one stage during the C19th, one in every 100 persons who worked in this country was a navvy. The word “navvy” came from the word navigator. By the mid-C19th – the height of railway mania – there were 250,000 navvies throughout the country. As railways were a vital component of the Industrial Revolution, the work of the navvies can also be considered crucial. | Shea, Jeremiah (I74)

| 524 | Notes from Facebook users about Irish ancestors: 1 Irish who emigrated from Cork & Kerry to Merthyr Tydfil by 1865 to work on the Dowlais Steel Mill, worked hard, followed the steel work to PA and followed the steel opportunities to Youngstown and then Alliance, OH where Welsh Mr Morgan ran his factory and built a Glamorgan castle. 2 I am told years ago by the librarian, that it was cheap and easy to take the ferry back to Ireland. Many Irish returned for baptisms, weddings, etc. 3 Follow step by step instructions here: https://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/Irish-family-history.html • Find out what Irish family history sources are available locally to where you live • Check census records (Complete) • Check civil registration records - birth, marriage, death certificates - vital records (Not Available) • Check church records (Complete) • Check land records (In Process) • Check legal documents such as wills and probate • Check emigration records if your ancestor left Ireland • Place queries on online message boards and genealogy forums • Find out more about your surname and Irish naming patterns • Join an Irish family history society • Locate, contact and interview distant relatives - they may hold many family secrets • Commission a professional genealogist • Learn more about the history of Ireland • Learn more about the heritage, crafts and social traditions of Ireland • Visit the area of Ireland where your ancestors lived. Other Search ideas: • searched in Ancestry Army Testation papers for John O'Shea/Shea and I made a guess of him joining around 1880 give or take a year or so, from Cahersiveen Kerry. you have to go through them and try and read. Some have the names of the person where they were living • Civil registration in Ireland only began in Ireland in 1864 and the related free state website irishgenealogy.ie has the following records to view : births 1864-1923, marriages 1864-1948 (Protestant marriages from 1845) and deaths 1871-1973. The said website also has the surviving Catholic and Protestant parochial records - baptisms & marriages - so you might be lucky. You should also look up Griffiths Valuation via the AskaboutIreland.ie website and search the household valuation books on the nationalarchives.ie website. You should be able to track your Irish ancestor's first marriage and the births of his children in Wales in the FreeBMD site (and the possible deaths of his parents there). The familysearch.org should also be useful for tracking history family via Welsh and American census returns | Shea, Daniel (I266)
