| 721 | The first resident pastor was Rev. Joseph Ptasinski, who served from 1903-1904. He was succeeded by three other priests -- Rev. Julius Kitter (April-October 1904), Rev. Ladislas Necid (October 1904-November 1907); and Rev. Joseph Adamek (November 1907-November 1908). These priests left for a variety of reasons, including lack of fluency in the Slovak language, disenchantment with life in America, and transfer to another, larger parish. | Family: John András / Susanna Putka (F277)

| 722 | The following notation is listed in the bio section of Find a Grave for Stephanus Smetanovsky: It seems that, for the most part, Joseph went by the given name of "Stephen". The surname "Smetanovsky" is mostly found in (oddly) the genealogical records of his Daughters (Maria and Sophia) who married two brothers by the surname of "Christopoulos" Both Sisters moved to Maryland with their Husbands and lived there until their deaths. Two of Joseph's Sons, Joseph and Stephen, changed their surnames from Smetanovsky to that of "Smith". Those two lived and died, most of their lives, in Youngstown, Mahoning, Ohio. Joseph's Wife, Maria Masler, died in 1920 and it would seem that Joseph remarried before his death in 1928 as several of his children are found living with their "Mother" in the 1930 and 1940 U.S. Censuses that were Joseph's from his first Wife, Maria Masler. It is uncertain, as of this writing on September 30, 2019, as to what the second Mrs. Joseph Smetanovsky's maiden name was. The following notation is listed in the bio section of Find a Grave for Stephanus Smetanovsky: | SMETANOVSZKŸ, Stephanus (I278)

| 723 | The marriage records of Jacob and Gertrude have yet to be found, and may never be found. We know that they came over to the U.S. in 1854. The reason for this is that they were definitely not married where so many people list them as being married. I have a paper from St. Philomenas that states there is no record of their marriage at that church. There is a baptismal record. I plan on posting both as soon as I scan the pile of things I have to scan. This should help everyone with sourcing some. We know they lived in Sharpsburg, and since they were German they probably attended St. Mary's which was dedicated in June of 1854, but had had services held in the basement since 1852. The inability to find records of a marriage is probably the result of a fire that destroyed St. Mary's church and it's records. In 1866, several months later the cornerstone for a new church was laid, and the church was rebuilt. On deducing a date this is how I came upon a timeframe. In the Federal Census of 1900 taken 5 June 1900 Jacob and Gertrude list 45 years as being the length of their marriage . That puts the marriage date between 6 June 1854 and 5 June 1855. We can probably assume they were married prior to October 1854 because of the date of the baptism of their daughter Catherine. The 1900 census goes on to state that they have been in the US 46 years and both migrated in 1854, yet have been married 45 years. This shows that the wedding would have probably occurred in the U.S. Taking all of this into account the wedding range would be between June and October of 1854. In Sharpsburg because that was where they were living at the time, and being german one can assume they went to the Catholic Church locally that was primarily German, St. Mary's, it was a split off of St. Josephs. The Church also often used priest s from St. Philomena's in Pittsburgh where their daughter was later baptized, and where there is no marriage record for them. St. Mary's burned down in 1866, and all records were lost in the fire. Thus there is little chance of finding a record of the marriage. | 727 | The village of Bundenthal is in a hilly, forested region known as the Pfalz and lies just a mile or two from the French province of Alsatia. My brother Tim and I visited there in 2001. Today it is very rural, but the village is really a bedroom community for the nearby cities of Pirmasens and Karlsruhe. In the 19th century, the residents were farmers, weavers, carpenters and laborers. The village was part of the German state known as the Bavarian Palatinate, which was rocked by a popular revolt against the monarchy and the land-owning aristocrats in 1848. It was the same popular revolt that swept through France and much of the rest of Europe. Prussian troops were called to put down the revolt in Mathew’s home region. | Brug, Frederick Jr (I13)

Waring; 2 - Robert Waring; 3 - J. M. Calderwood; 4 - Rev. John D. Stewart; 5 - John T. Mathias; 6 - George Burley; 7 - Jacob Burley about 1785, and his ashes rest somewhere in the neighboring town of Clearfield. Sinking Run merits more than a passing mention. Rising in the Allegheny summit it flows rapidly down its slope till, within the borough limits, it encounters a high rocky point through which it seeks an outlet. This it finds only by tunneling a passage for itself sufficient for ordinary times but too small for times of heavy rainfall or melting snow. For this overflow an additional escape is provided in Dry Run, which cuts a straight course to the Little Bald Eagle, a few rods above its mouth. The writer witnessed in the Spring Flood of 1893 a feat of heroism which ought not to go unrecorded, if not otherwise rewarded. A mad torrent was pouring down the run and whirling and roaring over the vortex of the sink, when a cry was raised "A child in the run!" While men and women were hastening to the scene and asking what should be done, a boy fourteen years old, Abbie Fleck, just coming home from school, ran down the bank to where the senseless form was tumbling about in the rocks and waters. In spite of the tremendous force of the current, he reached the drowning body and bore it to land. The little girl, Amelia Strohmeyer, six years of age, owes her life to the prompt action of her deliverer, for she was within a few yards of the sink and so nearly gone that several hours passed before consciousness was restored. For lovely mountain scenery the vicinity of Tyrone is unsurpassed. To climb the rocky ridges is no child's pastime but the views gained, of near and distant summits rising tier above tier, of winding watercourses, of blue sky seen through hills of darkest green, repay the toiler for his efforts. Such a vision spreads out before the eye from the top of Brush Mountain, overlooking the town and facing the Alleghanies. Its highest point here is said to be about 700 feet above the river. In an hour's ride by train or "over land" one may gain 1200 feet in elevation and fill his lungs with purest oxygen and refresh his thirst with water from the fountainhead. To the thoughtful man these lofty domes, topped with tall trees pointing skyward, preach a more eloquent sermon than | Strohmeyer, Catherine Amelia (I118)
