The witnesses were the father of the bride; Michael Deiss, citizen and farmer here, of the 3rd degree of consanguinity with the groom; Johann Michael Martin, schoolmaster here; and Johann Adam Wegmann, citizen and farmer here, guardian of the groom. They have all signed below with me except for the last, who, having been duly informed by me, declared that he did not know how to write. It seems to be a variant of the vernacular German Velten, which is itself a dialectical variant of the name Valentin. - It seems that the witness Michael Martin forgot to sign (though you can see his signature in the record above, which he also witnessed). - The 3rd degree of consanguinity note almost certainly means that Michael was Velten's paternal uncle.
